Overview
Project Safe R.O.A.D.s focuses on community education and awareness regarding older driver safety. The program provides assistance in locating driver refresher courses and skills assessment, as well as a variety of printed materials related to older driver safety, available in both Spanish and English. Some of these materials are targeted specifically to family members/caregivers who may be concerned about the safety of an older driver.

Budget/Funding
The budget for Project Safe R.O.A.D.s is currently $8000, which is generally used for materials.

Funding has been provided through a national grant, Older Americans Act Title III-B, and the New York State Office for Aging.

Outcomes
Through Project Safe R.O.A.D.s, agility exercises designed to improve physical range of motion have been incorporated into the AAA's existing strength and balance classes. These classes are part of the health and wellness program, and are offered at no charge at various community centers throughout the county.

The AAA has completed a survey of more than 800 adults in Onondaga County with respect to driving habits as well as current and future mobility needs. These results have not yet been published. A template is also under development that will be made available for communities to use in the expansion of local transportation options.

Project Safe R.O.A.D.s has noted an overall increase in requests for information and assistance regarding driver refresher courses and skills evaluations. There has also been an increase in the number of individuals requesting the informational materials related to older driver safety.

Role of Agency/Key Partners
The Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth is the nexus of Project Safe R.O.A.D.s. Partners include county community-based agencies such as Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army, as well as senior focal points. These partners aid in outreach to diverse populations within the community. Clear Channel Communications and the primary local newspaper serve as media partners, assisting in raising community awareness and publicizing Project Safe R.O.A.D.s events.
