Spotlight on Innovations and Achievements: Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia

Learn how this agency developed an innovative dashboard and scorecard system that brings strategic plans to life and keeps tabs on progress towards established metrics in full view for key stakeholders and decision-makers at all organization levels.

We're proud to highlight the award-winning work of the 2020 winners of n4a's Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards in this weekly spotlight feature. This week, we are focusing on the Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia's Dashboard and Scorecard System. The agency was a 2020 Aging Achievement Award winner in the Agency Operations category. The 2020 AIA Awards were made possible thanks to the support of Centene.

AAAs invest significant time, effort and finances in strategic planning to ensure their organization's effectiveness and sustainability. Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (SSSEVA) has developed an innovative dashboard and scorecard system that provides ongoing feedback and facilitates the organization's strategic goals. The scorecard concisely conveys progress across the entire agency, enabling team directors/managers to tie the agency's strategic plan to day-to-day operations. The dashboard synthesizes the data and metrics from the scorecard into charts and graphs for the agency's board of directors.

Since system implementation, SSSEVA has seen measurable progress toward strategic plan goals across all agency operations, including a reduction in 30-day hospital readmission rates among Care Transitions Intervention participants from 19 percent to six percent and an increase in rides provided to older adults in the Western Tidewater region.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, SSSEVA responded quickly to ensure older adults continued to receive the services they needed as well as emergency food, PPE and other necessities to keep them safe. During this time, the dashboard and scorecard system remained unchanged. Program Directors were able to note within the scorecard temporary service interruptions and show progress toward goals.
