Spotlight on Innovations and Achievements: Eldersource

We're highlighting the cutting-edge programs and successful strategies used by the 2018 recipients of n4a's Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards in this weekly spotlight feature. This week we're focusing on ElderSource, winner in the Technology category.

ElderSource adopted a learning management system to provide an alternative to in-person training for staff, providers, board and advisory council members and professionals in its community. This program, SEAL (System for Efficient and Acessible Learning), enables ElderSource to add topics to the system, keeping its trainings both updated and current.

The program was created when the ElderSource team realized the staff, providers and others in the community had a continuous need for ongoing, streamlined and efficient training. SEAL has continued to evolve with the addition of new trainings to the platform for staff and providers.

For AAAs looking to implement a similar learning management system that acts as an alternative to in-person training, the ElderSource team offers some advice: make sure to keep the training updated. It also helps significantly to have a champion on staff who is willing to take on training development. Although trainings can be conducted via PowerPoint presentations, other AAAs might consider additional training software to make the trainings more interactive and engaging.

The SEAL training program has shown great success. It has delivered almost 40 hours of training to more than 200 users, with 91 percent of participants saying the trainings are well organized, easy to follow and relevant, and 90 percent saying they would encourage a coworker or others to use SEAL to complete a training.
