Older Driver Safety Focus of New Data

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released a new fact sheet on older driver safety that reveals some notable changes among the age-65-plus population.

The number of people age-65-plus increased by 26 percent from 2005 to 2014 and older drivers made up 18 percent of all licensed drivers in 2014, compared to 15 percent in 2005.

However, older drivers involved in fatal crashes decreased by 4 percent and the fatalities of drivers age-65-plus  decreased by 10 percent over this period. The fact sheet also breaks down fatalities in traffic crashes by state and age group. Of those age-65-plus, the District of Columbia had the lowest fatality rate with only 1 fatality per 100,000 in that age group.
