Keeping Older Pedestrians Safe Focus of Forum on April 12

Research shows that 40 percent of Americans age 50-plus feel their neighborhood is not pedestrian-friendly and, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, older adults accounted for 19 percent of all pedestrian deaths and 10 percent of all injuries.

To provide context for this problem and solutions to address it, the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC), which is co-administered by n4a and Easterseals, is hosting a Twitter chat on April 12 at 2 p.m. ET.

Given the Aging Network's focus on strengthening the well-being and independence of older adults, providing tools and resources to help senior pedestrians feel safe is vital. Walking not only results in significant health benefits for older adults, but when a community provides safe walking routes, it opens up a world of travel choices for seniors who are able to access public transportation options.

Follow NADTC on Twitter (@NADTCMobility) and use the hashtag #Safewalking to participate.
