Join NCST staff and a panel of speakers for an interactive discussion on the importance of falls prevention awareness in transportation. Falling can be a very serious threat to older adults using public transportation. Unintentional falls are reported to be the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among adults age 65 and older, and each year 37,000 older adults sustain injuries that require a medical attention due to getting into and out of a vehicle. This discussion will include conversation with occupational therapists, falls prevention experts and local transportation providers around the risks of falling within public transportation vehicles and discuss strategies on how older passengers can use public transportation independently, safely and without fears.

The report identifies key strategies for successfully advancing this work at the local level—facilitating a variety of housing alternatives, expanding transportation options, changing the culture around aging and in many other ways making communities more livable for all residents as they age.
