Livable communities value and support people of all ages throughout their lifetime. They provide a full range of options for engagement and intentionally encourage the integration of community development, infrastructure development and services. Over half of the nations Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) are leading or involved in one or more livable community initiatives: 30% of AAAs are involved in an age-friendly community initiative, 37 percent are involved in a dementia-friendly community initiative, and 8 percent are involved in other types of livable community projects.
Involvement varies greatly between agencies, with some serving as advisors, and others having dedicated staff and funding for the initiative. Recent research suggests that AAA involvement in a funded livable community initiative reduces the percentage of nursing home residents in a county who have low-care status, indicating that these initiatives and partnerships facilitate aging in place.
In this Brown Bag, participants will learn about two AAAs’ involvement in dementia-friendly and age-friendly initiatives. Presenters will provide an overview of the initiative’s structure, staffing and funding, as well as their experiences. At least half of the session will be dedicated to audience questions and discussions.
After this session, participants will better understand how AAAs can be involved in livable community initiatives and the potential benefits that brings to their community. To encourage and facilitate conversation, participation will be limited to 25 attendees.
